Louisville -- home of Churchill Downs and its famed Kentucky Derby -- lies along the Ohio River, with the lovely Belle of Louisville sailing by as the oldest Mississippi-style sternwheeler in the country, and miles of white fences stretching across rolling bluegrass in the surrounding countryside. Louisville itself is a sophisticated city with its own ballet, orchestra, opera, theater from dinner to children’s and regional repertory, and a Shakespeare Festival. Add to that thoroughbred racing and what’s been called the most exciting two minutes in sports, plus the Kentucky Derby Museum, the world’s only museum dedicated to the horse race. Other attractions include the Louisville Zoo with its Gorilla Forest and Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom with Chang, billed as the world’s tallest, longest, fastest stand-up roller coaster. Louisville stoneware with an assortment of pottery patterns is made close to downtown, and west of Louisville is Caesar’s Glory of Rome, the world’s largest floating casino. Along with an affinity for hosting thoroughbred horse racing, bluegrass music, and bourbon, Louisville has more than 2,500 restaurants. With a hotel tax of 14.95%, Greater Louisville lodging options, from bed and breakfasts to luxury hotels, include 17,000 rooms, with more than 3,000 of those downtown and mostly within walking distance of the Kentucky International Convention Center.
